I recently met with one of Australia’s most respected and talented makeup artists, Jessica Berg. Jess knows best when it comes to accentuating her client’s natural features and I was lucky enough to sit down with her to achieve a ‘barely-there’ look.

Here’s how she did it and what I learnt:

Prep The Skin:

Jess firstly makes sure my face is clean and looking it’s best before applying any makeup. This creates the perfect base for her to work on.

My skin is cleansed with micellar water and Jess pops in some eye drops to freshen up my face. For further hydration, Jess recommends using an eye mask for a great pick me up and treating your lips to a moisture-rich balm to keep them smooth and don’t forget a hydrating primer!

Why you should be using a primer:

  • Locks in moisture to the skin
  • Helps to smooth makeup application
  • Keeps makeup lasting longer.

Makeup:

Base

The golden rule, according to Jess is that less is always more. “You can get flawless skin using minimal makeup and use foundation only where the skin needs it.”

Apply a small amount to a foundation brush and dab around the T-Zone, blending outwards over the face. “You can then build up the coverage slowly without overdoing it.”

Concealer is used to smooth into the creases and to hide any blemishes on my skin. Jess concentrates on my eyelids rather than under the eyes to brighten them.

Tips:

  • Using a concealer brush rather than the pen itself will help reduce bacteria spreading. She then blends with clean hands.
  • Use as a highlighter down the nose and cupids bow to enhance those features

A small amount of highlighter powder is feathered away from the face and dusted on the top of my cheekbones. Bronzer is applied where the skin naturally sees sun; Top of the eyebrows, nose and cheekbones

Eyes

Jess uses a matte neutral brown shade on me with a red base which works best for blue and green eyes. Using a blending blush, It’s applied to the top and bottom lash lines in a scrubbing motion. Then up to the crease. Jess will then blend with her fingers to smudge the colour upward and outward.

Tips:

  • Avoid blending all the way up the lid with the colour as this can close up the eye.
  • Again, less is more. Always build up the coverage
  • Cotton tips are handy to remove excess powder and touch-ups.

Jess used: Marc Jacobs Scanda Lust Palette

My lashes are now curled and mascara is applied with single lashes.

Tips:

  • Apply mascara first as a base to protect from the eyelash glue
  • Use a spoolie brush to separate lashes and tame brows
  • Brows can be filled with pomade and brushed with a clear gel.
